Coinciding with the boom of the international underground funk revival (promoted by labels like Soulfire, Daptone, Jazzman, Desco…), FUNXPLOSION was born in Madrid in 2003. The band pays homage to old school funk and its masters.
The leader of FUNXPLOSION is Carlo Coupé. After an outstanding career as an instrumental music composer – remember his albums "Estéreo Espectacular" (Subterfuge, 2001) and "Mis balas llevan tu nombre" (Subterfuge, 2002), records where Coupé plays jazz, soul, bossa-nova and funk – this Hammond Organ player (born in 1967) has decided to create an actual dance music alternative with an absolute electronic elements absence, inspired in the good times of black music.
The songs of FUNXPLOSION – composed by Coupé – show a lot of influences as the genre fathers (The JB's, The Meters, The MG's…), soul jazz & jazz funk Hammond masters (Lonnie Smith, Charles Earland, The Enforcers' Sonny Burke…) or rare american 60's & 70's deep funk artists (The Chefs, Timothy McNealy, The Fabulous Originals...).
The band respects the classic funk quartet schema: Hammond, guitar, bass & drums. Frequently, FUNXPLOSION relies on vocal collaborations (Harvey "Wah Wah" Banks sings "Show me your feet, girl!" in this debut LP) and assiduous wind and brass instrumentalists (Hugo Alcázar, tenor sax and flute, and Edward Marks, alto sax and flute).
The FUNXPLOSION foundling members are: Carlo Coupé (hammond organ), Héctor del Barrio (electric guitar), Gerardo Ramos (electric bass) and Gonzalo Maestre (drums).
On his first record, published by FUNK-O-RAMA records, entitled The New Carlo Coupé Funk Experience , FUNXPLOSION preserves the colour, dirtiness and fire of the original funk sound, using the correct instruments and amplification and the fallen-into-disuse recording methods.
Screamin' organs, groovy horns, killer wah wah guitars, powerful electric basses and muscular drums. HOT, WILD, EXCINTIN' and HEAVY UNDERGROUND FUNK FOR XXIth CENTURY!!! The LP includes future hits like "Up funk!", "Groovy, babe", "Peace & love & soul", "Show me your feet" & others.
